CALMAC - CHEAPER FERRIES - RET trial
Posted on
28 Feb 2008

From October 19th 2008, CalMac's Coll to Oban services will be part of a 30 month trial where fares will be charged at an equivalent road rate (called RET, Road Equivalent Tariff). Basically, it means all ferry prices to and from Coll will be reduced to just less than 50% of the current STANDARD FARE (not any discount fare).
For more information please see Calmac's webpage on RET's .

In conjunction with this, other major policy changes are being implemented:-

  • ALL concessions and 'cheap' arrangements are to be abolished EXCEPT those for senior citizens and visually impared persons.
  • There will be no 6 journey concessions under this scheme, although any remaining 6 journey tickets will still be valid.
  • ALL reservations will have to be paid at the time the reservation is made.

FERRY TIMETABLE - CHANGES?
Posted on
17 Jan 2008
Clansman at Coll pier

Caledonian MacBrayne have released the proposals offered to the Scottish Government for a ferry service between Mallaig and Lochboisdale - which will replace the current Oban to Lochboisdale route. If this were to happen, there would be implications for the ferry times on the Oban-Coll-Tiree route (and Barra in summer). It's a big IF and it will definetely NOT happen for the summer season of 2008.

Full details can be found on the CalMac website, with a more detailled report in this CalMac PDF document (1.0MB).

Below is a summary of the proposal's changes to the Oban-Coll route:

Summer:-
Timetable is roughly as now except:
  • Tuesday and Thursdays ferry times are swopped (so ferry would go to Barra on a Tuesday).
  • Friday boat would call into Coll twice.

Winter:-

  • Ferry every Tues, Thrs, Sat and Sun - all winter, not just up to Christmas.
  • Ferry calls twice on each of the above days.
  • Ferry leaves Oban later than now, at 08.30 hrs.
  • Ferry arrives back in Oban later than now, at 16.55 hrs.
Please do not reply to this notice but any queries should be addressed to the Scottish Government, CalMac or someone else.
