Re-cycling on the Isle of Coll
There was a time, not so long ago, when you just chucked the rubbish in the bin and hoped for the bin lorry to take it all away to the Big Hole on Tiree. If the junk was really big you bunged it in the car and took a trip to the Tip at Cliad. NOT ANY MORE! We asked for 1 container for plastics - we got 8. We also got 1 bin for tins, 1 for household batteries, 1 for glass, 1 for cardboard. Look on the map of Coll for where they all are. The units are emptied regularly, mostly by volunteers who take bags of clean, recyclable rubbish in their own vehicles to the Amenity Site in Oban. This winter the island produced 600 plastic bottles, 300 tin cans, 1 container of cardboard and 1 of glass EVERY MONTH!!!!

Here are some tips to help sort out the rubbish for recycling. GLASS JARS AND BOTTLES - REMOVE LIDS and RINSE (in washing-up water). PLEASE - NO lightbulbs, Pyrex, or window glass. Also, don't forget, jam-makers need empty jars to fill with delicious produce! Fill the blue container on the Middle Pier!
CARDBOARD - strip off plastic tape, flatten and keep dry. The cardboard is taken by the Council to Tiree Council Yard to be crushed and baled for further processing. Coll produces much more waste cardboard than Tiree - they need our card to make the council-owned crushing machine worthwhile! Pack the other blue container on the Middle Pier!
TINS AND DRINKS CANS - rinse but DO NOT CRUSH before posting in the red container in the recycling compound in the centre of the village near the shop.
PLASTIC DRINKS BOTTLES AND MILK BOTTLES - REMOVE LIDS and RINSE but DO NOT CRUSH! Please, NO OILS BOTTLES! Place in the black containers at the village recycling compound, the school and the Island Cafe.
HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES - non-rechargeable batteries such as AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt as well as those from mobile phones and watches can be placed in the multi-coloured container (provided by GRAB Trust) in the recycling compound.
And, if you must throw away stuff, visitors are reminded that there are EXTRA REFUSE BINS ON THE MIDDLE PIER in the village. These are emptied weekly into the refuse freighter, which then takes all our rubbish back to the council site in Oban! |
